Quick Hit Review: TMNT 1989 Arcade

Pizza Time?
In the 1980s the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles had movies, cartoons, breakfast cereal, and everything else one could imagine. Does this by product hold up? One of the best things to have the TMNT marking was the original arcade game. With several sequels, ports, and many poorly made TMNT games; this classic can still stand up as a great game even twenty years after the original arcade release.
The graphics are true to the original arcade version as is the audio. While the graphics have a nice old school feel to them the sound, especially the voice overs, sound dated. The voice over is the worst part, it is clearly the original acting in the original quality. If not for the speech balloons most of the dialogue would be impossible to understand. While keeping to the original is important, it would have been nice to have remastered audio for this release.
The game is the basic side scrolling beat ‘em up style of play. It still plays smoothly and the difficulty curve is not going to cause any problems for new or old gamers. There is the ability to play with all four turtles at once both locally and online. As this is an older release there is not a massive group of people playing online, but groups can be found online time to time.
Overall this is an arcade classic that everyone should try. While it is somewhat dated, it still plays just and fast and frantic as it once did. While TMNT 1989 Arcade has some flaws it is an inexpensive title and will provide hours of fun. This game is recommended for anyone who like old school arcade titles or side scrolling beat ‘em ups.

Verdict: B
