E3 2011: Metro: Last Light

I usually don’t start previews out with a spoiler alert, but I am warning you now, *SPOILER ALERT.* At the end of Metro 2033, Artyom allows for the destruction of the Dark Ones, which ends the conflict of Metro 2033, but with the downfall of the Dark Ones, new problems arise. The surface is still too irradiated for people to live upside, and the fight for the scarce resources leads to a civil war amongst the metro dwellers.

Metro: Last Light will be developed by 4A games, which is a wonderful thing for PC gamers. If you had a chance to play Metro 2033 on the PC, then you are already aware of the beautiful graphics and DirectX 11 support. 4As love for PC gamers was once again apparent in what I saw for Metro: Last Light. The game is gorgeous, and the build we saw isn’t even representative of the finished product. The lighting and shadow effects were impressive as well. The guns sounded like guns, not like the airsoft guns of Call of Duty. The ambient effects and sound design once again added to the immersion and experience that Metro series has come to provide.

One of my biggest issues with Metro 2033 was the loose, almost sloppy, gunplay. From the demo shown, the aiming looked improved, which is a big plus for me. The demoer also stated that in addition to the combat being improved, the stealth and AI are being improved as well.

Metro 2033 was all about the mood and story, and Metro: Last Light feels no different. The demo pulled me in and made me want more. As far as I’m concerned, 2012 can be 2034.
