Created by Erik Wolpaw and Kim Swift, GLaDOS (Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System) is the the cold and calculated AI in charge of the Aperture Science facilities. GLaDOS’ voice is actually done by Ellen McLain, a opera singer (video) originally from Nashville, Tennessee. Could you tell by the accent?

Ellen McLain’s voice credits date back to 2004 with Half-Life 2 credited as the Combine Overwatch announcer and to even the announcer on Team Fortress 2. One might recognize her voice as the “You Failed” voice as well as many others voices while working with Valve. McLain claims she was never a gamer, but after finishing her voice work with the original Portal, she said it was a game she wanted to play.

This is most of the audio from the developer commentary from Portal 1, where she reveals some of the direction that was given to her from the production team on how to actually voice GLaDOS. Enjoy.

KILLCAST 69 – Uncharted 3, Cataclysm, Tomb Raider Reboot

This week on we discuss the new releases namely Cataclysm, Fluidity, and Tron. As far as what were playing Don Allen finished Assassins Creed 2, and currently Darksiders on the PC. Andrew played mainly Fluidity and Epic Mickey. Evan has played Cataclysm extensively and gives an informal review of the game along with Jared. Michael continued his driving career with GT5 and his usual Resistance 2 and Castle Crashers trophy whoring.

November NPDS are out (No Public Data) but a few numbers leaked, Warren Spector defends Epic Mickey’s flawed camera system, Uncharted 3 is announced, and Tomb Raider is getting yet another reboot.

Our collective KILLPOINT is that a Lara Croft reboot with Crystal Dynamics is a futile attempt and Epic Mickey should be renamed to Alright Mickey.

KILLCAST 68 – Game of the Year Awards Worthless?

Are game of the year awards really relevant? Has the Spike TV VGAs become nothing more than a joke? Since when did it become the norm to make announcements and reveals there? Why should we or should not care and our solution to the whole mess all discussed in the main topic this week for one cohesive killpoint. As far as news goes, we talk about Kinect selling 2.5 million compared to the PlayStation Move’s 4 million with its one month head start. Also, an article in the latimes states that the Nintendo Wii is struggling as we voice our opinion back. All this and more including new releases and what we’re playing.

A little back story to this explanation.

Jim Sterling of Destructoid gave Final Fantasy 13 a 4/10. Sterling, which I enjoy reading and laughing at what he has to say about the video games industry is great. He makes a totally mockery out of fanboys.

Recently, Evan Velez, who is currently a contributing writer for the DualShockers wrote a simple post about Jim Sterling and his Final Fantasy 13 review. It escalated into a 800 degree article on n4g and over 70 comments on the DualShockers blog comments.

Southern Fried Gamer even posted a rebuttal article.

During this segment Evan explains what really happened and gets it out of his system.

KILLCAST, Need for Speed Jesse Abney Interview

The Need For Speed:Shift (NFS:S) release event was held at the Geisha House in Hollywood, Calif. and Electronic Arts sure knew how to throw a wonderful event in style. Aside from E3, this was one my first press only events dealing with the launch of the now critically acclaimed NFS:S. I was able to attend with the help of Scott diMonda and PlatformNation, thanks Scott! Scott was very nice and cared enough to allow one of my other contributors of CtrlAltKill to attend in place of Jay Kim who was unable to attend. At the event I was able to exchange a few words with producer of the game Jesse Abney through Katie O’Neill in charge of PR at the event. Katie was very nice and accommodating to introducing us to Jesse Abney, producer of NFS.

The Geisha had cool and cozy atmosphere with over eight 40 inch flat panel TV’s with NFS:S running on 360s as well as Need for Speed: Nitro playable on the Wii. There was even a giant display running NFS:S in 3D using polarized glasses on the PC with a 360 controller. I also got to sit down with Shift producer Jesse Abney and he answered a few of my questions about Shift.

Hands on Need For Speed: Shift on the 360 was a little awkward for me being primarily a PS3 owner, but the games controls lent themselves well over to my fumbling hands. Being a simulator type game, I was hitting corners, smashing into walls and driving into sand pits. However, every sim takes some understanding in the physics and feeling of weight regarding your vehicle. I feel that if I invested in a racing wheel and pedal set I would have enjoyed this game more in a way it’s meant to be played. Lots of sites already have their reviews up on the game and so far it has been received well thus far.

Next, I got my hands on Need for Speed: Nitro for the Wii. Nitro’s graphics were what you would expect from any Wii title but the game play is very intuitive using the Wii Wheel control setup. I found myself quickly acquainted with its controls and the use of drifting to get boost in order to edge out my opponent, and I did! Power-ups similar to Mario Kart were present in the game as well with different varieties such as glowing repair wrenches and boosts. I had a lot of fun on the Wii version because I could pick it up right away so most of the Wii’s audience shouldn’t have any problems either. Great simple fun.

Overall, the entire event was packed with people to talk to and meet. I had a great time talking to Jesse Abney, community manager Drew and thanks to Katie O’Neill for introductions to everyone. I hope everyone gets to play Need for Speed: Shift and to keep yours eye open in the future for Need for Speed World Online Q4 2009 and Need for Speed: Nitro hitting stores November 17 this year.

This week we have Adam and yours truly. I guess it’s just the two of us this week. We go over this week’s news and dip into some reviews of Batman Arkham Asylum (PS3) and The Price is Right (Wii). We talk about about how the Nintendo Wii might make it’s price drop in the first week of October and end it nicely. We ramble a bit here and there but I think we got the job the done.
